History and Origins
The Sun Nong Dan was an altar during the Joseon Dynasty that observed the Sun Nong Je, an event aimed at emphasizing the importance of agriculture to the people. The king conducted rituals here and even performed a ceremony of personally working in the fields. The tradition of boiling meat soup after the rituals at Sun Nong Dan, shared among many people, became the origin of Sul Lung Tang.
The most commonly accepted explanation for the origin of Sul Lung Tang is associated with the Sun Nong Je, a ceremony during which the king comforted the people after personally plowing the fields. It is said that during the Sun Nong Je, the king sacrificed oxen and used their bones to make a broth with rice, feeding it to many people. This rice soup, prepared with the beef bone broth, became known as ‘Sun Nong Tang,’ referring to the dish served at the Sun Nong Dan.
